DVDs or USB?

Many customers ask about converting VHS and other video formats to DVDs. While DVDs are still available, they are no longer the recommended format.

DVDs are typically more expensive to produce and reduce video quality due to the limitations of the DVD format. DVD video must be compressed using an older codec (MPEG), which results in additional quality loss compared to modern digital formats.

DVDs are also limited by disc capacity and can degrade over time β€” especially burned DVDs created by computers or inexpensive VHS-to-DVD converter units.

USB Flash Drives (Recommended)

USB flash drives allow your videos to be delivered using a modern and more efficient codec such as H.264, preserving better picture quality while remaining easy to play and share.

  • Better video quality with modern compression
  • Multiple tapes can fit on a single USB drive
  • Drive size can be matched to your project to minimize the number of USB drives needed
  • No degradation like burned DVDs

Another major advantage is convenience. USB flash drives can be plugged directly into most televisions manufactured within the last decade for simple playback without needing a DVD player.

Our Recommendation

For most projects, USB delivery provides better quality, greater flexibility, and longer-term reliability. DVDs are available when needed, but USB is strongly recommended for preserving your memories in the best possible way.
